PLAINVILLE - On its home court in the first round game of the 19th annual Rybczyk Memorial Tournament, Plainville girls basketball came out on fire led by star player Caitlin Barker.

Barker scored 28 points in the game, including 24 in the first half.

With the big offensive output, the Blue Devils topped the Bulldogs 74-32 on Wednesday.

As a team, the Blue Devils scored 47 first half points as Plainville eclipsed the 70-point marker for the second time this season (72 against East Hartford) and the third time in at least a decade (Bulkeley in 2012).

“It took fire,” Barker said. “We knew we were up, but we never took our foot off the gas. Everyone came in and had great minutes. We had people shooting threes and making them, we had every inch of the floor and it was a great team win overall.”

While Barker was the focal point for the Blue Devils she got strong performances out of the Lozefski sisters.

Isabel Lozefski scored 10 points on the evening and Sam Lozefski scored 15 points, as the two along with Barker were the three Plainville players in double digits.

In the first quarter, Bulkeley took an early 3-2 lead.

Barker knocked down a three pointer to give the Blue Devils a 5-3 lead. She wasn’t done as she completed a three-point play hitting her foul shot and then knocked down another three as Plainville went up 10-3.

With the seven point deficit, Bulkeley didn’t back down bringing it within two points behind a layup from Annaliz Torres and a three by Khanaza Ashley.

Torres and Ashley scored 11 of the Bulldogs 13 first half points and were held scoreless for the rest of the game.

With the two baskets, Bulkeley trailed just 10-8.

With a timeout called by head coach Jessica Nuewiler the Blue Devils were looking to get hot and they did just that.

“In the beginning of the game it was tempo,” Nuewiler said. “We weren’t necessarily playing to the tempo that we like to set so I called a timeout early just to talk that through and tell them that we need to control the pace.”

Plainville finished out the first quarter on a 20-5 point run. Barker had 13 points in the big first quarter while [Isabel Lozefski] scored eight points in the frame. [Sam Lozefski] had four points and Jaida Vazquez rounded out the scoring with five in the first.

The Blue Devils continued to pour it on in the second quarter outscoring Bulkeley 17-11 in the quarter. Barker had 11 points in the second quarter.

Going into the half with a 47-24 lead the Blue Devils finished it out.

Plainville will take on SMSA (3-2) in the final game today at 4:30 p.m.

“We’re expecting a fight,” Plainville’s Isabel Lozefski said. “But we’re expecting to come out with the win.”
