PLAINVILLE - Lydia Weinberg normally leads the sprinting events during a swim meet.

During Plainville’s 101-85 win over Bristol Eastern Tuesday afternoon, it was a different story.

The senior captain swam four events, three being distance. Weinberg anchored the 200 medley relay, which finished second in a time of 2:07.16 and anchored the winning 400 freestyle relay (4:11.79).

In the individually events Weinberg not only took first place, she also qualified for states. In the 200 freestyle she finished in a time of 2:14.91 and in the 500 freestyle she finished in a time of 6:09.34.

“Bristol Eastern is one of the teams in our division so we came into the meet thinking, ‘we have to take this,’” Weinberg said. “We’ve been preparing all season, we’re halfway through and we need to see this to the end.”

Weinberg said switching from sprinting to distance wasn’t too difficult. It’s a different mindset but it’s about keeping the same speed all the way through till the end.

It’s also about what is necessary to help the team win.

“We want to finish top in the CCC,” Weinberg said. “You’ll definitely be hearing more from Plainville, from now until the rest of the season.”
