NONNEWAUG - The defending state champions are still alive in the Class M state tournament.
The No. 19 Plainville boys soccer team pulled off an upset in emphatic fashion on Wednesday, routing No. 3 Nonnewaug 6-1 and earning a date with No. 6 Granby in Friday’s quarterfinals.
The Blue Devils were led by a monster performance from Patrick Gryczewski, who put home five goals, including three in the second half, to turn a 2-0 lead into a rout. Tanner Rau added the other goal for Plainville, which took down a Nonnewaug team that had lost just two games during the regular season.
“They are performing as expected and hoped for come tournament time,” head coach Tim Brown said.
Logan Miller dished out three assists in the win, while Rau and Gavin Bravado added a helper each as well. Goalkeeper Joey Romandi made three saves, while the defense allowed just four shots on net in the convincing win.
“It was just a team-wide terrific performance, from our defenders to our midfielders and our attack,” Brown said.
