Bristol Central girls soccer dominates Plainville, gets first win behind offensive onslaught

BRISTOL - The Bristol Central girls soccer team showed how badly it wanted its first win in its match against Plainville on Thursday.

Following a somewhat sluggish start, the Rams took at 2-0 lead into halftime, which ballooned into a 6-1 win by the end of regulation with a different player scoring each goal.

“I think it’s just nice to get a win in general,” Central head coach Ginny Godbout said. “[After the first three games], we wanted to just get over that hump so I think we definitely needed this game. We always have a tough time with Plainville, I don’t know what it is. We end up having this tough game with them every year and again it looked like it was headed in that direction in the first half. I think finally getting over that hump and putting the ball in the back of the net definitely helps.”

The Blue Devils fall to 0-4 on the season while allowing at least three goals in every match and contributing very little offensively with merely two goals in that span. Head coach Leszek Wrona doesn’t believe the problem stems from a disparity in talent as much as an inability to match the Rams’ strength.

“The physical aspect of the game is the part I think [we fell short],” Wrona said. “When you [look at] how the game was played, I think we played pretty well, but the physicality of the game we couldn’t handle.”

Despite dominating possession early, the Rams opened the match looking disjointed. The team was struggling to find its rhythm and appeared to be stuck after its 0-1-2 start. Some early adjustments and reminders from the coaching staff loosened the players up, and the scoring began shortly after.

“Once they settled down and we talked to them about playing that small-ball, that smart-ball,” Godbout said. “I think a lot of what happens is that we feel we have to rush all the time and there’s this energy they have, they get a little out of control. The idea of just slowing it down and seeing the field and seeing what you have and playing a little more simple and looking for those open passes.”

Sophomore Christina Browne ignited the scoring just past the 20-minute mark of the first half after chasing down a ball that shot out in front of the Rams’ offense and then eluded the Plainville defenders before tapping in her first goal of the season.

“I think that lit a little fire under us,” Godbout said. “We’re finally looking to rush to the goal and try and finish. So those girls who don’t have the ball, a lot of times we would kind of stand around as someone takes a shot. We’re trying to now get them in there, put pressure on the goalie and finish that ball. That’s been one of our big things and I think today we did a fantastic job.

Central’s second goal came in much heavier traffic, as both teams had most of their players in the Rams’ offensive third when Bella Bosco connected with Rachel Wygant on a short pass inside the box to double the lead.

“It feels really good to win,” Wygant said. “We all needed so much because tying and losing every game [so far] really brought us down and this one really lit us all up.”

Delaney Beausoleil put Plainville on the scoreboard with a sliding goal in the box that took advantage of poor defensive rotations from Central. This was just Plainville’s second goal of the season through four matches.

The Rams poured it on late in the second half with four goals to add to their lead from Jenna Lowe, Hannah Aldieri, Rebecca Litwincyzk and Ashlee Crumrine. Crumrine capped off the scoring onslaught by blasting a free kick over the head of Plainville’s goalkeeper from almost midfield in the final five minutes.

Both teams will take the weekend off before their next matches when the Rams host New Britain and the Blue Devils travel to Farmington on Oct. 13.
