PLAINVILLE - The Plainville boys basketball team picked a dramatic way to pick up its first win of the season.
Alec Couture hit three crucial 3-pointers in the fourth quarter and Artem Mojica sank two free throws with nine second left in overtime as the Blue Devils pulled out a 60-56 win over Bristol Eastern on Wednesday.
“It was just a solid team win tonight,” said Plainville head coach Scot Wenzel, who also earned his first win with the program after three years away from the bench. “The kids played all 36 minutes, and played hard and came out and played with intensity that we need to have every game.”
Couture and Mojica both came up in key moments for the Blue Devils (1-2), but Omarian Miller and Tyshawn Johnson paced the offense with 19 and 16 points, respectively. Couture also finished the night in double-figures with 12 points.
“Tyshawn and Omarian both did a great job handling the ball and finding ways to finish tonight,” Wenzel said.
Elijah Parent and Trini Otero both led the Lancers with 15 points each. Josh Kolano contributed 14 points as well.
The game remained close throughout most of the night. Plainville led 26-24 at the half and looked like it would pull away in the third quarter, but Bristol Eastern responded with a 21-point fourth to force overtime.
From there, the Lancers weren’t able to generate much outside of a single bucket in the extra period.
“A great team win,” Wenzel said. “I’m proud of the way we played tonight.”
