BRISTOL – Just five games into its season, the Bristol Central softball team looks to be firing on all cylinders after downing Plainville, 16-1, Monday.

The Rams put 10 runs on the board in the first inning and never looked back as it cruised to the win over the Blue Devils.

“I liked how even though we were winning by so much, we still stayed aggressive up at bat,” Bristol Central sophomore Alex Sciarretto said. “We cheered each other on no matter what, no matter what the score was.”

Bristol Central allowed a run in the fourth on a Plainville home run from Amanda Linhoff, but scored six more times in the bottom of the fifth to invoke the 15-run mercy rule stoppage.

“I thought we got the barrel to the ball and I thought we did a good job of putting the team away at the end there,” Rams coach Monica Hayes said. “We scored 10 in the first and then I think we were a little too over-aggressive. We weren’t swinging at strikes, swinging at too many first pitches and getting, out, out, out, out, out. We made [Kayla Wisz] throw more pitches in that last inning and we found some gaps.”

Gwen Torreso highlighted Bristol Central’s big first inning with a two-run homer, and Sciarretto, Janessa Bartell, Arianna Rivera, Kaley Laird and Sophia Torreso also tallied RBI in the inning.

“A little bit of a hole after that first inning, but we played them pretty even the rest of the way,” Blue Devils coach Scott Marcucio said. “We played nice, clean softball. Defensively, we were making good plays. Offensively, just not enough contact at the plate. We got some good swings on the balls and we drove it and got the barrels out front. We made some good contact but it needs to be a little bit more consistent.”

Plainville had a tough go against Sciarretto, the Rams’ starting pitcher, as the visitors managed four hits throughout the game. Sciaretto picked up 13 strikeouts in an impressive showing for the hosts.

“She was hitting her spots and she’s just very impressive,” Hayes said. “She’s a sophomore and obviously without playing last year, we’re still getting used to what she throws and she’s working on hitting her spots and keeping it low. I thought she was a little high today, but she got some big strikeouts when we needed them too.”

“Definitely my pitches were working today, even though I didn’t get to use all of them, definitely curves and drops were working pretty well today,” Sciarretto said.

Bristol Central recorded 14 hits during the contest with Sciaretto, Sam Sklenka and Kayla Paige all finishing with multiple hits.

Wisz, Plainville’s starting pitcher, went five innings, striking out one and walking eight Rams batters.

Monday’s win marks the third time Bristol Central has scored more than 10 runs in a game. The Rams beat Simsbury 11-0 on Apr. 14, then Hartford Public 18-0 on Apr. 19.

“Against teams with better pitching, we’re not going to be scoring 11 runs, 15 runs so I think it’ll be a different story against different teams,” Hayes said. “I thought we executed pretty well today.”

When the runs were coming as quickly as it did for Bristol Central, Sciarretto admitted it made her job easier on the mound.

“Even when we’re playing aggressive teams, as a pitcher, it feels more comfortable when you’re down and your team can pick you back up,” Sciarretto said.

The Rams will welcome Berlin next on Wednesday at 3:45 p.m. while the Blue Devils will host Platt on Wednesday as well, with first pitch set for 3:45 pm.
