NEW BRITAIN – Four goals in the first half propelled Plainville girls soccer past New Britain, 7-2, Thursday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Nayelle Heredia led the Blue Devils with a couple of strikes, while Julia Maksymiw, Ariana Clifford, Morgan Levesque, Tea Autunno and Marissa Miller scored once each for the visitors.

Adriana Gutowski and Abby Wasik netted goals for the Hurricanes, who fell to 0-2 to start the 2021 season.

“We kept fighting until the end,” New Britain coach Adriana Pagliuca said. “I thought we got better as the game went on.”

The Hurricanes lost their first game to Newington, 9-1, last Thursday.

The victory improves the Blue Devils to 2-1, after they suffered their first loss of the season on Monday to Bristol Central, 5-0.

“The girls worked hard and played well,” Plainville coach Leszek Wrona said. “They showed great sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the game.”

Maksymiw broke the scoring open midway through the first half after finishing off a nice pass from Levesque. Clifford doubled the Blue Devils lead to 2-0 at 30:41, before Heredia quickly made it 4-0 before the halftime buzzer.

At 10:48 of the second frame, Levesque earned her second point on a rebound goal, before Autunno netted a tally on a breakaway at 11:56.

Miller then scored at 12:39 for Plainville to make it 7-0.

The Hurricanes fought back to make it a 5-goal deficit late in the second half.

Gutowski kicked in a rebound off a New Britain corner kick for its first strike off the match, then Wasik curled in ball from outside the box with her left foot to make it 7-2.

Wasik, a junior, was the Hurricanes’ top threat on offense with a couple of bids late in the game.

With only one substitution, fatigue played a role for New Britain in this one compared to the Blue Devils who had a handful of substitutions ready to go.

Plainville will look to make it two in a row when it hosts Hartford Public on Tuesday, Sept. 21., while New Britain hosts Manchester on the same day.
