SOUTHINGTON - A Philadelphia man has been sentenced to three years in prison in connection with a residential burglary in Southington in which an SUV was stolen.

Patrick Thompson, 21, appeared in Bristol Superior Court Monday, where he pleaded guilty to charges of third-degree burglary and third-degree larceny. The pleas were part of a deal offered by state prosecutors.

As part of the deal, prosecutors reduced the burglary charge from that of the second-degree. Charges of third-degree criminal trespassing , sixth-degree larceny and third-degree criminal mischief were not pursued.

According to the arrest warrant, local police responded to the report of a residential burglary on Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike on Jan. 16, at about 5:17 p.m. The homeowner told officers someone broke into the home while he was upstairs. He heard noises before discovering the first floor door open.

The homeowner initially did not report anything missing, but after looking around further he discovered his wallet was gone. Additionally, the man noticed several hours later that his 2003 Jeep Liberty was missing. The vehicle was still parked in the garage when police responded to investigate the burglary.

The homeowner believes the burglary suspect took the keys to the car during the break-in and came back later for the vehicle.

According to the warrant, state police a day after the burglary responded to Middlebury on the report of a broken down motor vehicle. Troopers found that the disabled vehicle was the Jeep Liberty reported stolen a day earlier.

Thompson, according to the warrant, was in the driver’s seat and was charged with third-degree larceny for being in possession of a stolen vehicle. He was not charged in the burglary until February. He had been held on bond since.
