SOUTHINGTON – Kettle Bagels on Queen Street offers authentic, Brooklyn-style bagels, boiled fresh every day.
The breakfast eatery located at 1217 Queen St., which opened six weeks ago, serves up Brooklyn, New York style bagels in addition to coffee, drinks, wraps, muffins and more. They also deliver to Southington, Plantsville and Bristol.
“New York-style bagels have a hard crust on the outside and are soft in the middle,” said manager Daniel Perdomo. “I’m from the Jersey area, and I noticed that while people love bagels in Connecticut, we seem to be lacking in authentic, New York style bagels. We don’t use any preservatives; everything is made fresh every morning. We boil them first prior to baking, then put them on boards covered in burlap inside a rotating shelf oven. They go around two to three times to get a good crust and then flip. The stove cooks the bottom while the heat cooks the top.”
Perdomo said that he is from a family that owns restaurants in New Jersey. Four years ago, he moved to Farmington with his wife and children looking to set up a shop to share his culinary expertise. Since opening, he said that the response from the community has been “excellent.”
“A lot of people love our bagels; we have a 4.9 out of 5 stars review on Google and a four-star review on Yelp,” he said. “In addition to bagels, one of our specialty sandwiches is ‘The Hog’, which has three eggs with cheese, bacon, Taylor Ham, sausage and hash browns on a grinder.”
Perdomo added that the coffee sold in the shop is created by his friends from New Jersey, who own the Arabica coffee shop.
“They really make a great coffee,” he said.
Perdomo said that he plans to eventually join the local Chamber of Commerce and participate in community festivals once he has “got things running smoothly” at his shop.
