SOUTHINGTON - More than 300 people descended upon Crystal Bees Tuesday night to satisfy their cravings for a variety of local pizzas.

Lines stretched around multiple vendor tables and practically out the door as visitors awaited their chance to try something new. Samples were served by David Alan Hospitality Group, Family Pizza Truck, New Haven Pizza Truck, Verona Pizza, Costco, Crystal Bees’ Glass Hat Bistro and more and ShopRite provided an option of three different types of side salads. Visitors were also able to enjoy the venue’s bar, bowling and arcade games.

Liz Hyatt, executive director of the Southington Chamber of Commerce, said that it was a “sweet turnout.”

“It shows that there is definitely an interest in a variety of different kinds of pizza in town,” she said.

Judie Ostroski, of Bristol, began the event by trying Costo’s combo pizza, which had pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms and peppers. She said that she has been to many different pizza fests in past years.

“I like to try different kinds of pizza so when I get the opportunity I jump on it,” she said.

Paul Lehr of Southington, a World War II Navy veteran, said that he has been coming to the pizza fest each year since the event’s inception.

“I like to find out what sort of pizza restaurants are around,” he said.

David Scott, of Farmington, who was eating Verona’s mashed potato pizza and tomato basil pizza, said he never misses a pizza fest.

“The mashed potato pizza has a very well made crust and the tomato basil is delicious too,” he said.

Holly McLin, of Southington, said that it was her first year at pizza fest and that it was an “excellent” event.

“Everything was great,” she said. “There is a nice variety and I’ve tried a little bit of everything. I had never tried New Haven Pizza Truck and they’re excellent and David Alan Hospitality Group’s candied pear pizza was awesome.”
