Annual evaluation comes up straight A's for Connellan

SOUTHINGTON -The Board of Education has given School Superintendent Tim Connellan glowing reviews in his annual evaluation.

The evaluation was based on Connellan’s performance from July 1, 2016, through the end of the 2016-17 school year. He was evaluated based on standards including board-superintendent relations, community relations, personnel relations, education program, business matters, professional leadership and personal qualities.

School board Chairman Brian Goralski said that Connellan has met or exceeded expectations in all standards. The board, he said, “recognizes and values” Connellan’s leadership in all areas of his work.

Goralski also said that Connellan accomplished the goals that he set for the past school year.

“Mr. Connellan’s leadership is moving our district toward improved student outcomes and ongoing improvement of practice by our staff,” said Goralski. “The board appreciates Mr. Connellan’s organized, thoughtful and student focused approach in his own professional practice as superintendent of the Southington Public Schools. The board looks forward to continuing our work with Mr. Connellan.”

Connellan was out of the office last week and could not be reached for comment.

A report released by the Southington school system detailed some of the goals that Connellan set and met.

One was to “continue the implementation of schoolwide SRBI Teams (Scientific Research Based Intervention). By Oct. 1 2016, implement professional development for school-wide SRBI teams regarding the purpose of and process for SRBI teams with an initial focus on literacy with a transition mid-year to include numeracy. By October 17, 2016, ensure that all schoolwide SRBI teams are in place and engaged in the work.”

The Connecticut State Department of Education defines SRBI:

“The broad benefits of SRBI come from its emphasis on uniting scientific, research-based practices with systems approaches to education. Scientific evidence is substantial for a number of areas connected to children’s school success and well-being, such as reading, language development, some areas of mathematics and social-emotional learning.”

Connellan also commissioned a “detailed and comprehensive school enrollment study” and saw to the updating of the security camera system at Southington High School.
