SOUTHINGTON - Festivalgoers turned out early on Saturday to beat the crowds at the 49th annual Southington Apple Harvest Festival.

Jeff Leone of Berlin brought his 9-year-old daughter, Maria, and twin sons to the festival Saturday morning to take in some of the activities that they weren’t able to get to last weekend.

“They had the parade last weekend and you couldn’t even move in here,” Leone said. “The kids wanted to go on the rides.”

“Last Saturday, you couldn’t even get on any rides,” he continued. “You had to wait 25 minutes in line.”

After rushing down the slide on a potato sack, Maria, said she couldn’t decide which fall event she liked better: the Berlin Fair or the Apple Harvest Festival.

“I don’t know,” she said, shrugging.

While long ride lines were few, even the early birds couldn’t avoid a wait for the festival’s famous apple fritters.

Olivia Charette brought her 3-year-old daughter, Megan, after having come to the festival several times over the past few years.

“We waited only about 20 minutes in line for fritters,” Charette said. “It wasn’t bad.”

“We like the craft fair and the fritters,” she added.

Besides fritters, the festival also features a number of other treats from a variety of food trucks and vendors, including macaroni and cheese, gyros, chicken wings and Mexican dishes.

Lisa Darmetko, who brought her young son Anthony, enjoyed fried clams and chips from the Lenny and Joe’s Fish Tale food truck. She said she has been to the festival a number of times.

“He loves the rides,” Darmetko said. “I figured this is the last chance for him to go on some carnival rides (this fall).”

The festival, which spans two weekends, will continue all day today before wrapping up for the year.
