SOUTHINGTON – Two people accused of stealing $15,000 worth of jewelry from a Southington relative were turned over to local police early this morning by Hartford officers.

Albert Skwiot, 35, of Southington, and Melissa Quinn, 33, of Cheshire, were wanted by Southington police in connection with the theft of dozens of gold earrings and rings that investigators believe occurred while they were visiting a relative.

Skwiot visited the relative at their home with Quinn on Sept. 24, police said. During the visit, Skwiot was seen walking through the house and out of the victim’s bedroom, police said. Quinn allegedly tried to block the victim’s view of Skwiot wandering through the house so they couldn’t see what he was doing, investigators said.

The victim later checked the bedroom and discovered that 20 pairs of gold earrings and 40 gold rings worth a total of $15,900 was missing. Through the investigation into the theft, police believe that the pair who frequently visited the victim, had been stealing the jewelry over a period of time, but it wasn’t discovered missing until Sept. 24.

Many of the items had been pawned throughout the state over time, police said.

Southington police obtained arrest warrants for the pair but were unable to serve them until Skwiot and Quinn “had contact” with Hartford police at about 4 a.m. this morning. Hartford police discovered that both were wanted by Southington police and taken to the Southington Police Department.

Both were charged with second-degree larceny and conspiracy. Skwiot was also served with an additional warrant charging him with failure to appear in court. He was held on $25,000 bond until his arraignment in Bristol Superior Court today. Quinn was held on $10,000 bond and is also expected in court today.
