SOUTHINGTON -The Fall Fling 400 Ultra and 5K returns to YMCA Camp Sloper Nov. 12, giving runners a chance to run for hours through the fields and trails and around the camp pond.

Race-day check-in begins at 6:30 a.m. at the camp at 1000 East St. Participants are encouraged to arrive and check in by 7:30 for the pre-race briefing at 7:45. The Fall Fling 400 Ultra will begin at 8 and the 5K run will start at 8:05.

Runners can continue to run in the 400 Ultra until 2:40 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCA and CT Trailmixers.

John Myers, executive director of the YMCA, said that this event began last year alongside a Spring Fling 600 Ultra - a 10 hour run.

“For our 400 Ultra, runners will run as many two-mile loops as they want to within 6 hours and 40 minutes,” said Myers. “They will begin in the field, then head into the woods and then do a loop around the pond. For those who hike or run trails, there are some areas which aren’t as flat and which will be more technical.”

Last year, Myers said, 75 runners took part in the 5K and more than 100 in the 400 Ultra.

“We had two guys run 19 loops, or 38 miles, and three women run for 30 miles,” said Myers. “It attracted a pretty cool group. They were very supportive of other runners and when they were done running they would often volunteer to serve food to other runners.”

Myers said runners should feel free to attend the event without any pressure.

“Many of the people who attended last year’s event do 50- to 100-mile runs on a regular basis, but participants can feel free to run or hike,” he said. “There is no pressure to come in first.”

Registration for the 400 Ultra is $40 before Nov. 8 and then $50 through race day. Registration for the 5K is $20 before Nov. 8 and then $30 through race day.
