SOUTHINGTON - Town council members were appointed at Monday’s meeting.

Chris Palmieri will serve as council chair. He has served on the council for 14 years, including six years as minority leader.

“I’m incredibly humbled and honored,” Palmieri said. “I’m excited to be in the majority. The five of us come from diverse backgrounds and the synergy of the five us will really benefit the community and town.”

Palmieri said one of the first things he wants to focus on is collaboration and communication. He will establish a committee of the chairs monthly meeting, where each chair of the board of education, finance, planning and zoning, along with the superintendent of schools and town manager meet to make sure everyone knows what is going on in each board.

The current issues the council is facing is town infrastructure improvements and navigating the local budget as it relates to current and future state budgets, according to Palmieri.

To further expand communication, Palmieri said the council will work to create community chats that give people an informal opportunity to come forward and raise concerns.

The council will also create a Facebook page to establish a social media presence, “since so many people are on social media these days,” Palmieri said.

Also appointed to the council are Dawn Miceli as vice-chairman and Victoria Triano as minority leader.

“Everyone was very kind to one another. It was a smooth transition of authority and they were complimentary of one another,” said Town Manager Garry Brumback.

During the meeting, council members also approved the snow bids for the upcoming season.
