SOUTHINGTON – The Knights of Columbus are giving local youth an opportunity to shoot for greatness at their sixth annual Basketball Challenge Jan. 6.

The free competition will be held from 11 .am. to 1 p.m., at the gymnasium of Southington Catholic High School. Registration is open to boys and girls ages 9 to 14 living in the Southington, Plantsville, Milldale and Marion. Boys will compete against boys and girls will compete against girls of the same age for each division (9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14). Rolling registration will be held from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Grand Knight of the local Knights of Columbus Phillip Mazzotti said that each competitor will try to make 15 free throw shots. Those who make the most free throws for each gender and age group will go on to compete at larger events.

“Other Knights of Columbus councils will be doing tournaments throughout the country,” he said. “Those who win at our council will go on to compete at a district event, then a regional event and then the state final, which is usually held at St. Paul Catholic High School in Bristol. For the higher level events, they will be doing 25 free throws instead of 15 and the winner of the state final will receive a trophy.”

Mazzotti said that 20 to 25 children typically compete locally.

“We have had participants in the state finals every year,” he said. “Last year, our 11-year-old Gabrielle D’Angelo came just one basket short of winning the state finals.”

Mazzotti said that the Knights of Columbus sponsor this event to encourage physical activity in youth.

“It is a fun event, but it also provides them with the experience of being competitive, focusing and trying their best,” he said. “It is also a way for us as an organization to introduce ourselves to and get involved with the youth.”

Southington Catholic School is located at 133 Bristol St., Southington. There is a snow date planned for Jan. 13.
