SOUTHINGTON - YMCA Camp Sloper in Southington will be hosting its Annual Fishing Derby April 14.
The fishing derby will begin at 9 a.m. at the camp located at 1000 East St., with on-site registration beginning at 8 a.m. Parents and children are all welcome and coffee, fruits and juice will be available.
The derby will end at noon, followed by a small lunch provided by the Southington YMCA Adventure Guides. After lunch, guests are welcome to stay at YMCA Camp Sloper for the Adventure Guide program kick-off. Guests will be participating in traditional YMCA Camp Sloper activities as well as learning about the Adventure Guide program.
Tom Sangeloty, assistant camp director, said that the event has been held for the past 10 years and has typically drawn between 50 and 100 children and family members.
“It has grown steadily from year to year, depending on the weather,” he said. “We see a few more families every year.”
Sangeloty said that young fishers can expect to catch sunfish, small mouth bass, and the occasional catfish in Sloper Pond. Those who catch fish that day will receive a congratulatory certificate that the Y will be printing up for the event.
“We’ve stayed away from having prizes and trophies for things such as biggest fish or catching the most fish to instead make this a fun, relaxing day to spend time with the family and enjoy yourselves while fishing,” said Sangeloty.
The cost of the fishing derby is free for Adventure Guides members, $5 per child for full members of the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCAs, $10 for program members of the Southington-Cheshire Community YMCAs, and $15 for non-members.
