SOUTHINGTON - The first Open House of the season will be held April 21 at YMCA Camp Sloper.
The open house will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the YMCA Camp Sloper Outdoor Center at 1000 East St. for those interested in coming out to meet the camp staff, take a tour of the facility, ask questions and register their children for camp. All children who attend will receive a gift.
“Spring is finally here and we have been very busy getting the property into shape for our spring and summer programs,” said Justin Hubeny, who will be the camp director for his first summer this year. “We have a great group of staff and volunteers who dedicate time to making YMCA Camp Sloper look great for the campers and members.”
“Each year we make improvements and additions to the programs and facilities to keep things fresh and stay current with the trends,” Hubeny added. “The exciting new addition for the 2018 season is the Ninja Warrior Course.”
Hubeny said that enrollment for the 2018 season is off to a great start with some specialty camps already filled. The open house, he said, is a perfect opportunity for parents and children to see what camp is all about and to register for the camp programs that are still available. YMCA Camp Sloper still has some space available in all the Traditional Camp programs, with the exception of Sloperians which is full for Session 2.
People can also register for the following specialty camps: Adventure Camp, Bookworm Camp, Building Block Camp, Cheer & Dance Camp, Circus Camp, Cross Country Camp, Eco Camp, Farm Camp, Fort Building, Girl Power Camp, Show Stoppers, Golf Camp, Around the World Camp, Musical Theater Camp East, Photography Camp, Sports Camp and Track & Field Camp.
Additionally, the camp’s Wanderers program for 3 to 5 year olds, which runs in one week sessions from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, also still has openings throughout the summer.
“The Wanderers program is a great introduction to what camp is all about,” said Mark Pooler, the Southington Community YMCA’s director of operations. “It is an age-appropriate program for our youngest campers and gives them a taste of what’s to come in future years at camp. Both my kids went through this program in recent years and loved it.”
Pooler said that YMCA Camp Sloper offers a summer full of “fun, adventure and tradition” in four, two-week sessions, running from July 2 through Aug. 24 as well as a one-week preview from June 25 to June 29.
The day camp program runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with extended camp care available if needed. YMCA Camp Sloper serves children ages 3 to 15 years old. Bus transportation is provided for residents of Southington, Cheshire, and Berlin. There is no bus transportation for Wanderers. Financial assistance is available for qualified families who live in Southington and Cheshire. Payment plans can also be arranged.
Those who cannot attend the April Open House will have other opportunities on May 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and June 6 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
