SOUTHINGTON – School officials warned parents Wednesday of a possible case of measles at Derynoski Elementary School.
A letter was sent to parents and staff members at Derynoski Elementary School by Superintendent of Schools Tim Connellan.
Marie Bordonaro, school nursing supervisor, detailed the possible exposure that may have occurred on April 26, 27 and 30 and is currently under investigation. The measles exposure has not yet been confirmed and Bordonaro said she would update parents and staff when there is more definitive information.
“If this case is confirmed, any individuals who may have been exposed might develop symptoms between May 3 and May 21,” said Bordonaro in her letter. “Because measles is a highly contagious disease, it can spread quickly among unvaccinated people. However, the majority of people exposed to measles are not at-risk of developing the disease since most people have either been vaccinated or have had measles in the past, before vaccination became routine.”
Fortunately, Bordonaro said that measles vaccination is highly effective.
“One dose of measles vaccine protects about 95 percent of vaccine recipients; a second dose increases protection to about 99 percent,” said Bordonaro. “People who have had measles in the past or who have been vaccinated against measles are considered immune according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.”
Measles spreads into the air when an infected person breaths, sneezes or coughs. Symptoms usually appear in 10 to 14 days after exposure, although they may occur as early as 7 or as late as 21 days after exposure.
