SOUTHINGTON -- Two pets perished in a house fire at 53 Pattonwood Drive Friday afternoon. Firefighters were called to the scene on the report of smoke coming from the home.
Glenn Dube, Southington fire battalion chief, said firefighters encountered heavy smoke conditions and fire visible in one window when they arrived.
One dog and one cat were killed in the blaze but one dog made it out safely, Dube said. No one else was in the home. Aside from the pets, no injuries were reported.
Dube said he believes the home is occupied by only one person, but the department is still investigating. The home sustained severe damage and was left uninhabitable. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Mutual aid was called from Plainville, Bristol and New Britain because of a lack of daytime manpower and because of the hot, humid conditions for the firefighters.
Dube said it’s always sad when people lose pets during fires, and that firefighters do everything they can to rescue them.
