SOUTHINGTON - A man and a woman from New York each face a felony charge after they were found in Southington inside a stolen vehicle.
Ishmael Jefferson, 20, and Ty-jeneyah Cruz, 19, have been charged with first-degree larceny and possession of marijuana after state police pulled over a stolen 2018 Chrysler 300 - worth $38,900 - on June 27.
The vehicle was seen heading west on Interstate-84 at about 7 p.m., before it left the highway and turned into a local hotel parking lot. There, police conducted a traffic stop and found a small amount of marijuana in the Chrysler, according to the state police report. The driver, Jefferson, told troopers the marijuana belonged to all five people in the vehicle, the report continued.
Jefferson, police wrote in the report, was arrested for being in possession of the stolen vehicle. Cruz, the report said, was charged after state police found that the Chrysler was rented on June 19 from a rental center in Windsor Locks by a woman who used a fraudulent credit card.
The car rental center reported the vehicle as stolen after it was not returned on the day it was due back.
Jefferson, who is being held on $40,000 bond, and Cruz, who is being held on $25,000 bond, are scheduled to appear in Bristol Superior Court on July 25.
The other three people in the vehicle were charged for the marijuana and released.
