SOUTHINGTON – The final touches of the new senior center project are wrapping up and the Calendar House Building Committee is eyeing a grand opening in September.
The re-paving of the parking lot, over the site of the former Calendar House building at 388 Pleasant St., concluded last Friday says Paul Champagne, chair of the Calendar House Building Committee.
Seniors have been using the new senior center building since February. All that remains to be done is landscaping work, including planting grass, which will start this week.
“Parking had been restricted while we took down the old building and repaved the whole area,” Champagne said. “We probably took away two-thirds of the parking spaces. But, now they are available again and with paving complete, we’ve added about 20 more. We’ve gone from 120 to 140 parking spaces.”
Champagne said that seniors have enjoyed the new building.
The former building was roughly half the size of the new facility and had undergone several additions as it served various municipal roles over the years.
“They didn’t want leftovers or a piecemeal building anymore,” Champagne said. “Our new building has a lot more space for different activities and programs, including a pickleball court.”
In addition to parking spaces and landscaping, Champagne noted that the town was looking to set up solar panels on the roof of the building.
As a former member of the town council, Champagne said that the council had voted three or four years ago to put solar panels on the roof of as many public buildings as possible. Overall, Champagne said that the project has gone “very positive.”
He thanked KBE Building Corporation and the other members of the Calendar House Building Committee who had been working on this project since February and March of last year.
“We did have a month delay while we were wrapping up demolitions,” Champagne said. “We were removing asbestos from the flooring and ceiling panels and the state mandated that we run three air quality tests. Otherwise, we would have been ready to open in August. But we did it right and got it done.”
