SOUTHINGTON - A Middletown man has been charged in connection with a second armed robbery in Southington.

Police allege Shawn Mullaly, 43, wearing a blue bandana over his face and a hooded sweatshirt, brandished a knife and demanded that the clerk at Henny Penny open the cash register on Sept. 4, at about 11:54 p.m. The clerk said the blade was somewhere between 5 to 10 inches long.

Police said the suspect took $150 and four or five packs of cigarettes before fleeing the store, located at 273 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike. No injuries were reported.

According to police, Mullaly was scheduled on Friday to appear in New Britain Superior Court on charges in connection with another local robbery. He was served with a warrant at the courthouse, charging him in the Sept. 4 incident. He faces charges of first-degree robbery and sixth-degree larceny.

Mullaly was previously arrested Sept. 10 when he and Franklin Brown, 60, of Middletown, were found by Middletown police after officers saw evidence linking them to a Southington robbery in plain view in their vehicle. Brown was also arrested.

Southington police said they were called that day to the Food Bag convenience store, located at 960 Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, at about 2:58 a.m. on the report of an armed robbery. According to police, a suspect entered the store wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and a camouflaged mask, armed with a knife. He went behind the counter and told the clerk to open the register, grabbing $114 and some Newport cigarettes before fleeing the store.

No injuries were reported.

According to judicial records, Mullaly has also been charged in a robbery reported in Middletown. He is being held on $499,500 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned in connection with the Sept. 4 robbery on Jan. 9 in New Britain Superior Court.
