SOUTHINGTON -Registration for YMCA Camp Sloper’s 70th year of day camp will open on Saturday, Feb. 2, with online early-bird signup.
“This will be our 70th year of camping at YMCA Camp Sloper and we are very excited about the 2019 day camp season,” said camp Director Justin Hubeny, who will lead the camp for his second summer.
Beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, priority registration for 2018 campers and full members of the Southington and Cheshire Community YMCAs will be accessible by clicking from ymcacampsloper.org. No in-person registrations will be taken taken on the early-bird registration day.
The YMCA encourages families with campers who will be doing a specialty camp or the Sloperian program for children entering kindergarten and first grade this summer to register that day if they qualify to do so. Full-membership and/or attendance at camp in 2018 will be verified before the registrations are confirmed.
All other campers may register beginning at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, at the Southington or Cheshire Community YMCA. Registration will be available online as well through the summer.
Y membership is not required to attend YMCA Camp Sloper. Every child registered is considered a program member, unless they have a full membership to the Southington or Cheshire YMCA.
Campers who have full memberships to the Southington and Cheshire Community YMCAs will pay a rate that reflects a $50 discount per session, in addition to all the other benefits of YMCA full membership.
YMCA Camp Sloper serves Southington, Cheshire and Berlin, and even draws campers from other states and overseas.
“Full members and last year’s campers who are interested in specialty camps including the NEW Ninja Warrior Camp East, should take advantage of the Early Bird Online Registration Day to secure a spot in the camp program of their choice, those tend to be the ones that fill up first. Also, our Sloperian program for campers entering K and 1 filled up every session last summer. If you have a child in that age group, you will want to register early. Many of the parents I’ve talked to plan to register them the first day” said Hubeny.
The 2019 season will feature some new specialty camp programs, including Ninja Warrior Camp East for children entering grades 3 to 5, and Gymnastics Camp West for those entering grades 6 to 9.
Hubeny said YMCA Camp Sloper offers four consecutive, two-week sessions from July 1 to Aug. 23. There is also a one week preview that will be held June 24 to June 28. The Wanderers program, for 3 to 5 year old campers, will be offered in one-week sessions from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. all summer including Preview Week. The day camp program for campers entering Grades K to 10 will run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with extended camp care available before and after camp if needed for an additional cost. Bus transportation is provided in Southington, Cheshire, and Berlin. There is no bus service for Wanderers. Bus schedules will be posted on the website at ymcacampsloper.org.
“Last year online registration for the first day was a huge success with over 1,400 registrations taken in,” said Hubeny. “We hope the early-bird online registration this year will be equally successful. We believe parents’ willingness to register their children is attributed to the quality programs, camp enhancements and role model staff members at YMCA Camp Sloper. With online registration, it is very easy to do that from the comfort of your own home.”
Monthly installment plans can also be arranged to spread the cost of camp over an extended period. Financial assistance also is available for qualified families who live in Southington and Cheshire.
