SOUTHINGTON - The 10th annual Healthy Family FunFest, presented by Hartford HealthCare and the Southington Community YMCA, offers free health screenings and information for all ages.
The free event will be held Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Aqua Turf Club, 556 Mulberry St., Plantsville.
Erica Stinson, a member of the event’s planning committee as well as Hartford HealthCare’s marketing manager, said more than 100 vendors will be on hand, including local nonprofits and booths offering free health screenings. Nonperishable food items also will be collected for Bread for Life’s food pantry.
“It’s a day where people can be exposed to all kinds of health and wellness opportunities in the area,” said Stinson. “There will be information for infants to adults and there will be lots of different health screenings. We’ll be filling up the entire Aqua Turf and the police and fire departments will be outside teaching car seat safety. There will also be a mammography-mobile, where women can get breast screenings. We’ll also have blood glucose screenings and flu shots.”
New to this year’s event will be “The MEGA Heart,” an interactive exhibit that visitors will be able to enter via the superior vena cava, the largest vein, and leave through the aorta, the largest artery that exits the heart. This inflatable exhibit, which measures 21 feet long, 15 feet wide and 12 feet tall, showcases heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. Visitors will be able to learn about cardiovascular functions, see examples of heart disease, risk factors and latest medical treatments.
Cardiac specialists from the Hartford HealthCare Heart and Vascular Institute will provide heart health education. A representative from Medical Inflatables will be on hand to guide the tour.
The event will also include a kids area, a “Family Fitness Challenge,” child vision evaluations, demonstrations, educational materials, giveaways and special activities focused on healthy minds, aging well, women’s health, sports medicine and rehabilitation.
Special guests will include Cory Myers and Renee DiNino, of iHeartMedia, and Rob Dibble, a Southington native and former professional baseball player who now is a radio sports analyst.
