SOUTHINGTON -American Legion Auxiliary Kiltonic 72 invites the community to come out for a Spring Fling on April 6 at Testa’s to support veterans.
The event, also known as “Love our Heroes” will be held from 6:30 to 11 p.m. at the banquet facility at 26 S. Center St. It will feature a buffet dinner, dancing a cash bar and raffles. The Small Town Gamblers, a local seven-piece group, will be on hand, playing rock ‘n’ roll, country and classic rock.
Event Chairwoman Sherri Valentin, said this is the 10th year that the Spring Fling has been held.
“It started as a fundraiser for a young couple,” said Valentin. “The young woman was going to be getting married and her husband was serving overseas when he stepped on an IED (improvised explosive device). He had to have a bilateral, below-the-knee amputation. The event was very successful and I hear they are doing quite well now.”
After the success of its first year, the Spring Fling has gone on to raise money to support veterans through the Fisher House Foundation, House of Heroes and the Veterans Fund at American Legion Post 72.
“Although the turnout varies from year to year, sometimes we have as many as 196 people,” said Valentin. “Enzo Testa has been a huge supporter of this event and if it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t be able to do it. They provide all the food.”
Valentin also thanked the women who serve on the event committee and make the Spring Fling a success year to year. Additionally, she thanked the local restaurants and community organizations which donate to the Spring Fling’s raffle prizes.
Valentin said the Small Town Gamblers have also been “significant” supporters of the event.
“They come back year after year by popular demand,” she said. “They’re really good and they really get the crowd moving.”
Valentin encouraged people to come out and show their support.
“It’s a fun night out for a very good cause,” she said.
Tickets are $40 per person. No tickets will be sold at the door. The deadline for registration is April 1.
