SOUTHINGTON - Since 2007, Good Deeds Day has been a global movement in 60 countries around the world, encouraging people to do good deeds. For the fourth year, Southington residents are being encouraged to join in with the “Southington STEPS - Good Deeds Week” from April 7 to 13.

“What a great week in our community - People doing good deeds for one another in an effort to support kindness,” said Mark Pooler, STEPS board member, YMCA executive director and one of the coordinators for Good Deeds Week. “I love that this has become a standing tradition in town and really appreciate all that participate.”

During Good Deeds Week, Pooler said that people are encouraged to volunteer and put into practice the idea that “every person can do a good deed, be it large or small, to improve the lives of others and positively impact the world.” The idea initially began as “Good Deeds Day,” but Southington STEPS has expanded it into a week-long initiative.

“I like to get our leadership staff from the YMCA out that week and into the community to help others,” said Pooler. “It is great to spend time together helping others and doing some teambuilding.”

For the last few years, the STEPS-led initiative has been very well received, according to Kelly Leppard, youth prevention coordinator for STEPS.

“Not only do we have individuals and families in the community participate, but each school in the Southington Public School system participates through their Asset Building Classrooms Team as well,” said Leppard. “Service to others is one of the assets the district highlights as an ‘Asset of the Month.’ It is important that our youth understand the value in helping others.”

To participate in Good Deeds Week, sign the pledge at southingtonsteps.org/gooddeedsweek, then complete a random act of kindness during the week of April 7 to 13.

Good Deeds Week participants are encouraged to take a picture of their good deed and send it to the Southington STEPS Facebook page or email them to southingtonsteps@gmail.com.
