NEW BRITIAN - Literacy Volunteers of Central Connecticut will celebrate over 40 years of service to the community with its second annual “Love of Literacy” event established to help raise money for adults and families in its literacy programs.

The event will be held on Wednesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. Guests will enjoy an extensive wine selection, bourbon and beer tasting, heavy appetizers, raffles and a silent auction.

Tickets are $55 per person or $400 for a table of eight with reserved seating.

WNPR’s Chion Wolf will host the event. Wolf is a technical producer, announcer, photographer, and personality with WNPR and the Colin McEnroe Show.

International best-selling author, Matthew Dicks, will be the featured guest speaker of the event. Some of Dick’s novels include: “Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend,” “Something Missing,” “Unexpectedly,” and “Milo.”

“It will be a fun atmosphere and people are going to have a great time,” said Executive Director of LVCC Maria Simao.

Simao said the organization trains 200 volunteer tutors to work with students to identify and reach their personal goals; such as preparing for a job or becoming a U.S. citizen. The organization also provides free childcare for approximately 20 children aged eight or younger while their mothers are attending classes to learn English to support their children’s success in school, or to assist them while they earn their GED.

“The Love of Literacy is our biggest fundraiser of the year. We rely on the proceeds to support our programs,” said Simao.

Since 1978, LVCC has been providing small group and one-on-one literacy tutoring to over 400 adults in the communities of New Britain, Middletown, Bristol, Berlin, Burlington, Cromwell, Durham, East Haddam, East Hampton, Haddam, Kensington, Marlborough, Middlefield, Plainville, Portland, and Southington. Tutors are volunteer based and receive high quality training, free of charge, prior to becoming a literacy volunteer.
