SOUTHINGTON - A 20-year-old was found guilty and sentenced in New Britain Superior Court Monday for the armed robberies of two food delivery men in January.

Patrick Brown was sentenced by Judge Maureen Keegan to 15 years, suspended after five years, with three years probation in both cases after pleading guilty in July to first-degree robbery in each of them. The sentences for each case are to run concurrent. He was initially facing more charges.

According to a warrant for his arrest, Brown brandished a 9-inch knife during a robbery of a Chinese food delivery driver on Jan. 9 outside the Motel 6, 625 Queen St. The victim, who was not injured, handed over about $400 and the suspect took off running, the document continued.

Brown was then arrested on Jan. 11 after a man trying to deliver a pizza said he was robbed outside Motel 6. The victim said he was confronted by a man in the parking lot who had a knife in his hand and demanded all of his money. The victim gave him about $273 in U.S. currency and some Indian rupees.

Investigators were able to ping the cell phone that was used to make the pizza order, finding that the device was still in the area of Motel 6. They then found Brown in one of the motel rooms with cash, rupees and some crack cocaine.

After the Jan. 11 robbery, detectives spoke to Brown while he was in custody and admitted to police that he robbed the pizza delivery man and said he robbed the Chinese delivery driver days earlier. Brown also told police he needed money and never had any intention of hurting either of the victims.

During the sentencing, public defender Christopher Eddy said it was drug use that affected his client’s decision and that Brown is looking to put this behind him. Keegan advised Brown to use probation “wisely” after discussing addressing any substance abuse issues he may have.
