SOUTHINGTON – Sign Pro in Southington will start manufacturing hundreds of face shields a day starting Wednesday. The company will be donating several to first responders, as well as making them available to purchase by the general public.
Pete Rappoccio, owner of Sign Pro, located at 60 Westfield Dr., Plantsville, said over the past two days they have created more than 450 face shields with their new 3-D Printer. Some have since been donated to area first responders.
“When we saw how bad this was getting I said that we have the tools and we have to jump in,” Rappoccio said. “It took a little research and development but we now feel that we have them at a place where they are a comfortable fit. While they are not officially FDA approved, they can help to safeguard people on the front lines. We want to support our first responders, the hospitals, the police departments and the nursing homes. We have also had several clients asking us to produce them. We’ve backed the community since we started 30 years ago and we’ll always be here for the community. When we come out of this, I hope that people will continue to help each other”
Rappoccio said Sign Pro will be producing two types of face shields, with prices starting at $13. There will be a simpler, disposable face shield which they can produce 400 copies of per day, and a more durable model which they can produce 200 copies of per day.
Sign Pro has remained open amid the coronavirus pandemic, with 40 employees continuing to work on-site while 38 staff members continue to work remotely. Rappoccio said they have been helping different sectors safeguard against the coronavirus.
“We have been making floor signs for grocery stores to promote social distancing,” he said. “We have also created splash screens for retail outlets and to protect drivers on commuter busses. We just installed them on the shuttle busses at UConn Health Center last Saturday as well and this weekend we will be outfitting the Southeast Area Transit District fleet.”
