SOUTHINGTON – Southington Town Manager Mark Sciota says it will be “impossible” to fill the shoes of “visionary” developer Mat Florian of Florian Properties.

Florian died July 22 at 60 years old. Sciota said that he had “the honor of knowing him for many years.”

“He was a true Southington gentleman,” said Sciota. “I worked with him for many years through the town and Planning and Zoning. I never had a bad experience with him; he was always upfront with you. On both a personal level and as a town leader I will miss him.”

Some of the properties that Florian developed over the years include 98 Main St., where Flair restaurant is now located, 1 Center St. and the former Beecher Street School. He also developed several properties on North Main Street.

“He was a true visionary,” said Sciota. “Over the last 20 years he took vacant buildings that you and I would look at and say ‘this needs to come down’ and said ‘I can do wonders with this.’ And, then he would do it.”

Sciota said that Florian was one of many business owners who helped the town to thrive over the years.
