SOUTHINGTON – Southington looks to complete bridge and road repairs.

The Town Council has selected a consultant, AECOM, for the repair of the Spring Street Bridge which has been rated as in “poor condition” by the State Department of Transportation. It was constructed without a waterproof membrane to protect the deck, which has led to its deterioration.

“This consultant has worked in town before and we’ve been happy with them,” said Sciota. “At their next meeting, on Jan. 25, the contractor with the project will be voted on. This project will be funded through the state and federal government.”

The paving of local roads, which was approved by residents along with the bridge repairs during a November referendum, will also continue this year. At the time, 14,779 people voted in favor and 6,669 were opposed.

Roads which are scheduled to be addressed in 2021 include Atwater Street, Beacon Street., Douglas Street, Mark Drive, Moore Hill Drive, North Star Drive, Pebble Drive, Rosalyn Drive, Sheldon Road, Town Line Road, Welch Road and Windward Place

These roads, Sciota explained, were selected via a computer algorithm created which would prioritize the roads that were most in need of repair, considering factors such as their current condition and then they were last repaired. Sciota said that this has allowed the town to plan its road repairs for many years in the future.
