Sports Roundup: Hughes strikes out 12, Goodwin Tech baseball wins seventh straight

MANCHESTER - The Goodwin Tech baseball team is officially on fire.

Since a season opening loss to New Britain, the Gladiators haven’t dropped another game and have increased their winning streak to seven with a 6-2 win over Cheney Tech on Friday afternoon.

Tommy Hughes was the winning pitcher for Goodwin Tech and he was dominant. The right-hander went the complete game and allowed just five hits and two runs while striking out 12 batters.

The Gladiators got big offensive games from several different players as Keith Selander, David Plourde, Matt Dciarkowski and Josh Masterson each had multiple hits. Selander led the way with his 3-3 day which included two RBI.


Farmington 184, Newington 216: The Indians were no match for Farmington on Friday as the team had the three top scorers in the match. The top scorers for Newington in the loss were Jessica Pierzchalski with a 48 and Chloe Bilodeau with a 50. Farmington’s Mia Grzywinski was the medalist as she shot a 39.

Southington 3, Newington 1: The Blue Knights took an extremely close game against the Indians that featured all four sets going to deuce. Southington increases its record to 7-1 with the win. Evan Metzger was a standout for Newington in the loss as he double-doubled with 35 assists and 10 digs.
