2017 All-Herald Boys Golf Team: Our group of stars on the links certainly can shoot low

Our All-Herald Boys Golf Team had a tremendous season on the links. While some started slow, the area teams were peaking at the end of the season for strong finishes.

Newington finished with a regular season record of 18-5 and a tie for eighth place in Division I. And a big part of the Indians’ success was the play of Noah Hedberg.

The senior leaves Newington as one of the program’s most accomplished and decorated golfers. Not only did Hedberg earn his third All-CCC selection in golf this past season, he became the school’s first All-State player in nearly 15 seasons. On the course, Hedberg shot the lowest differential in the conference, at .75, and medaled in 11 of 16 matches, while shooting under par four times. A two-year captain, Hedberg was part of 66 victories during his time with the Indians, making the All-CCC Tournament Team twice. He will be off to Florida Gulf Coast University where he will be studying Pro Golf Management and business.

His teammate, Ben Weyman, also has an outstanding season. The senior finished earning his second all-conference honor. Weyman medaled or co-medaled in six matched this year, up two from last season, and had a differential of 3.08, which qualified him for All-State consideration. While he will be off to UConn for college, Weyman leaves the Indians ranking in the top 10 in career average in program history.

After a 15-11 regular season, Berlin finished out the year on a strong note, finishing ninth in Division II with senior Ricky Nappi leading the way. Nappi finished the state tournament tied for 41st and earned his third All-CCC selection. On the course, Berlin’s No. 1 golfer shot a 4.29 differential. The Redcoats Award winner his junior and senior season, Nappi will be attending UConn this fall.

Southington’s Nate L’Heureux rounds out our list. The Blue Knights struggled this past season, but the senior rounded out his final year with a strong showing in the Division I state tournament, where he finished in a tie for 23rd place. L’Heureux earned all-conference honors for his performance.
