HARTFORD - Plainville’s Pisa Cobras knew they had the potential to be the best team in the Nutmeg Games 16U Roller Hockey Tournament and Sunday, they showed it.
The Cobras took the gold medal behind a dominating performance over the previously unbeaten West Haverstraw Bricktown Bandits 6-2.
“[It was] our best game of the tournament,” Cobras head coach Larry McNamara said. “Very fast, with good forechecking and solid defense.”
Adam Poetto scored twice, while Justin Stergos, Devin Norton, Mason Cipriano and Connor McNamara netted a goal apiece.
But the Cobras also got plenty highlights from goaltender Nick Mongillo, who McNamara considered the team’s MVP of the tournament.
“He bailed our team out with fantastic saves over and over,” McNamara said.
The Cobras had gotten to the title game after a 5-2 win over the Mahopac Indians.
“We would like to thank The Plainville Indoor Sports Arena, [the kids] home rink and second home, for sponsoring our team,” the head coach said.
“For providing us with jerseys and an awesome family atmosphere, where all of the kids play hockey.”
Bristol’s East Coast Militia also played two games Sunday, but fell both times. The Militia lost a close contest to the Bandits 7-5, before losing the Bronze medal game to the Indians 8-3.
It was a tough ending for the Bristol Warriors in the 18U girls soccer tournament as they fell to the Pomperaug Panthers 1-0 in the gold medal.
It marked the first time since the tournament began Bristol had lost a match. The Warriors had won their previous four heading into Sunday.
In the 11U bracket, the Southington Sonics dropped their last game of the Nutmeg Games 4-0 to the Bridgeport Scorpions.
In the Open Division for the field hockey tournament, Newington’s Dragon-Owls, lost their first two games before winning their last one 3-2 over the UConn Field Hockey Club.
Lauren Anderson scored twice in the win while Zoe Fanolis netted the other.
