MANCHESTER - The CIAC held its cross country state meets Saturday afternoon at Wickham Park and while none of the local schools took the crown in their respective classes, there were plenty of outstanding performances.
The Berlin boys and girls cross country teams finished tops among the area schools with the girls turning in the best outing of the day.
The Redcoats took second place in Class M, finishing behind only Nonnewaug by a score of 129-94. Juliana Cancellieri, Megan Perrotta, Madison Marolda and Sarah Pertotta were the top runners for Berlin. Cancellieri placed sixth overall, while Megan Perotta, Marolda and Sarah Pertotta placed 10th, 30th, 35th and 48th.
The boys ended their afternoon by placing fifth in MM. Michael Parzych was the team’s top finisher, coming in 11th. Joshua Ladd (17th), Gianni Fanelli (33rd), Nicholas Parzych (39th) and Cole Primo (48th) rounded out the Redcoats’ top five.
The Innovation boys team finished in the top 10 of its class as well, placing seventh in S. Anthony Corso took 17th to lead the Ravens, while Brennan Kievman, Quentin Askew, Jonathan Rodriguez and Gabriel Matias placed 29th, 51st, 54th and 69th.
After Berlin, the Southington girls team had the best finish locally as the Blue Knights came out in 10th in Class LL. Leading Southington was Natalia Adamczyk (37th) as Isabella Scalise (47th), Sarah Minkiewicz (49th), Kailey Schmarr (61st) and Julia Michnowicz (83rd) rounded out its top five.
The boys team for the Blue Knights, finished around the middle of the pack in Class LL at 15. Conner Leone (34th), Shane Leone (57th), Ryan Slesinski (58th), Sean Young (92nd) and Matthew Penna (93rd) were the team’s best finishers.
Newington ended its state meet with a top 10 placement in the boys Class L race. Aiden Toth was once again the best runner for the Indians, placing 10th. Samuel Geisler (22nd), Serhiy Demyanov (58th), Salvatore Scata (91st) and Joseph Bohlke (93rd) rounded out Newington’s top five to finish 10th overall as a team.
Newington girls team took 19th place in Class L. Samantha Gorski (82nd), Julie Robinson (90th), Alexa Freitas (96th), Madelyn Gentile (102nd) and Vanessa Seguro (122nd) were the top finishers for the Indians.
Over in Class M, the Plainville boys team took 13th with the McNamara twins, Connor (44th) and Cole (55th), leading the way. Bryan Buckley (81st), Brandon Zheng (108th) and Luke San Juan (123rd) were the other top runners for the Blue Devils.
The girls team for Plainville ended its afternoon with an 18th place finish. Taylor Lapira’s 66th place led the Blue Devils, while Kaycee Newberry (90th), Julia Restelli (96th), Teagan Russell (98th) and Helena Rose Yawin (110th) rounded out their top five.
