Sports Roundup: Berlin girls swimming has best finish of area teams in swim championships

NEW BRITAIN - The Berlin girls swim team placed eighth in the Class S state championships on Tuesday with 243 points.

In the 200 medley relay, Kelly Chmielewski, Nadia Humen, Gabby Pattavina and Madeline Palmese placed eighth in 2:02.73.

Chmielewski finished sixth in the 100 butterfly at 1:05.92.

Pattavina also raced in the 500 freestyle with teammate Kailey Lacasse. Lacasse placed 16th (6:15.73), while Pattavina was 14th (6:11.94).

In the 200 freestyle, Chmielewski, Joanna Sobilo, Palmese and Pattavina finished eighth in 1:50.49.

The Southington girls swim team also had a strong showing in the Class LL finals Tuesday evening. Although they placed 12th overall with a score of 207, they broke five school records.

The 200 medley relay team of Meghan Hammarlund, Julie Duszak, Maddie Symecko and Olivia Fournier finished seventh with a new school record time of 1:52.75.

The 200 freestyle relay team of Duszak, Gianna Perugini, Andie Nadeau and Fournier finished eighth with a new school record of 1:41.11.

Hammarlund finished 16th in the 100 backstroke with a new school record of 1:02.09.

Fournier finished eighth overall in the 50 freestyle with a new school record time of 24.63 and 11th overall in the 100 freestyle with a new school record time of 53.52.

Duszak finished sixth, medaling in the 100 breastroke with a time of 1:09.68.
