Sports Roundup: Berlin girls basketball uses strong defensive effort to beat Plainville

BERLIN- There wasn’t much offense between the Berlin and Plainville girls basketball teams Friday night.

But the Redcoats didn’t need much behind a strong defensive effort.

Berlin held the Blue Devils to just four points in the second half, giving them a 38-20 victory.

Lyzi Litwinko led Berlin with 13 points while teammate, Ashley Wenzel added 12. Wynter Yovan scored eight points, but pulled down 16 rebounds for Berlin.

Sam Lozefski scored a team-high eight points for Plainville.

The Redcoats were able to maintain a constant lead all game, as they led by five at the end of the first quarter and then by two by the halftime break.

Southington 56, Avon 33: The Blue Knights have just recovered after their loss to Simsbury earlier this week.

Southington jumped out to an early first-quarter lead and never looked back.

Janette Wadolowski had a game-high of 32 points with 15 boards.

BOYS BASKETBALL

New Britain 69, Bloomfield 61: The Hurricanes improved their record to 10-5 with its latest win over Bloomfield Friday evening.

Maurice Turner led New Britain with 20 points while Thameen Dupree had 18.

The Hurricanes used a big third quarter as they scored 25 points to regain the lead, a lead they would not lose for the rest of the game.
