SOUTHINGTON - The National High School Coaches Association announced its 2018-19 Academic All-Americans on Thursday, and the list was full of Southington standouts, all of whom were members of this year’s wrestling team.
Seniors Jason Brault and Jacob Cardozo, juniors Billy Carr and Jacob Vecchio and freshman Ben Gorr all earned NHSCA Academic All-American honors as part of the organizations 26th class. Gorr was one of just 10 freshmen in the country to earn the honor, thanks to a 4.0 GPA and a fourth-place finish at the Class LL state wrestling championships in March.
Carr also posted a 4.0 GPA and placed in fourth at the state championships, coming on the heels of winning a state title as a sophomore. Classmate and teammate Vecchio finished sixth at states this year after a third-place finish in 2018. He also has a 4.0 GPA.
Brault improved upon his state championship tournament finish on the mat this season, placing third after a sixth-place finish in 2018. He was the fourth member of the Blue Knights to boast a 4.0 GPA.
Cardozo finished his wrestling career at Southington as a champion in the Class LL tournament, while adding a 3.7 GPA to his resume.
The group of Blue Knights were coached under the eye of Derek Dion, who has been the head coach at Southington since 2003.
