NEW BRITAIN – A disastrous third quarter put an end to the Goodwin Tech girls basketball team’s season, as they fell to 22nd-seeded Morgan 50-25 in the first round of the Class M state tournament.

Trailing by three points at halftime, the 11th-seeded Gladiators were outscored 22-0 in the third period and lost nearly any chance of reaching the second round. Morgan had an eight-point lead after the first quarter, but a strong second quarter had Goodwin Tech trailing by one possession entering the break.

Megan Lukeszewski’s eight points led the Gladiators’ offense while Morgan received double-digit efforts from Ava Johnson (12) and Caeley Ayer (10). Morgan will face sixth-seeded Seymour in the second round.

Southington ran away with the Central Connecticut Conference West Championship on Tuesday, scoring 301 points as a team to outlast Hall by 67.

The Blue Knights left with more history than just a division title as Matt Niro, Alex LeClair, Peter Zalewski and Landon Colby’s time of 3:21.64 in the 400 freestyle relay earned them a conference championship and set a new meet-record in the event.

Colby, Niro and Zalewski also earned individual conference championships. Colby touched the wall first in the 200 individual medley, finishing in 2:02.27, while Niro dashed to first place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 50.05 seconds. Zalewski finished the 500 freestyle in less than five minutes (4:57.05) for first place at the meet.
