NEWINGTON - A national mattress manufacturer based in Texas will be opening a factory in town next month.
Corsicana Bedding is expected to begin operations inside the former Fafnir Bearing building at 353 Alumni Road, bringing with it 150 new jobs.
Company officials have leased 203,000 square feet from Shelbourne Global Solutions, the New York real estate investment company that owns the building. Other tenants include ADS Warehouse Solutions, Davidson Specialty Foods, Huttig Building Products and family play arena Jump on In.
This will be Corsicana’s 11th U.S. plant and its furthest expansion northeast, with the closest factory in Barnsville, Pa.
“This new facility allows us to meet the growing demand for all of our products in the northeastern United States, while ensuring service to our customers remains outstanding and our costs highly competitive,” CEO Chris Baker said. “Newington provided a strategic location with close proximity to our customers in the region and a community with an excellent work force.”
Corsicana bills itself as the nation’s largest low-cost manufacturer of private label mattresses and box springs.
Newington officials are enthusiastic about the far-reaching implications of having a new manufacturer in town.
Town Economic Development Director Andy Brecher said that adding another taxpayer to the grand list is the least of many gains.
“Taxes are never the main objective in economic development,” Brecher explained. “A building humming with activity is always preferred to an empty space. Manufacturing jobs bring good wages, which in turn get spent on housing, food, transportation, goods and services, medical care, entertainment, etc.”
He added that the company is likely to purchase materials and equipment locally.
“It is wages and business spending and the multiplier effects from them that bring improved prosperity to a community,” Brecher pointed out.
The company’s building applications are currently going through the zoning process and construction is expected to begin later this month. Recruiting for several hundred positions will continue through the next year, according to officials.
