BERLIN - Berlin has another thing to be envied for now.

Envy, a hair salon, recently relocated from Market Square in Newington to 224 Berlin Turnpike, and held a ribbon cutting for it last week.

“Three months of torture, but we did it,” said owner Nichole Vega before cutting the ribbon. “We hope everybody enjoys the new place.”

The name comes from Vega’s initials, which are “NV.” The 39-year-old has been in the industry for 21 years, having worked at a Regis salon at the Westfarms mall before she set off on her own 10 years ago.

Her solo move came about because her son was born four months prematurely, she said. She couldn’t handle her managerial schedule of 40 hours-plus a week at Regis while taking care of her son.

“I couldn’t go into any day cares because he was so tiny,” Vega said.

Now, with triple the space as the cutting floor as at her previous place, which was 688 square feet, Vega said she can focus solely on cutting people’s hair.

At her last place, which featured a separate café and massage/facial place areas, things were a little segmented.

The landlord also didn’t want her at her last place, she said. So her Realtor, Mike Matrone, of Century 21 Clemens Group, found the current location, which is not too far away from her old location.

It is in a new building built alongside the new Acura dealership within the last few years. One unit is the home of The Fresh Monkee, while two other units remain vacant.

“It looks like a painting when you look out the window,” Vega said, pointing out the view of an open field off Deming Road next to the salon. “Every time I walk through the door, I’m shocked that I did this. ... It’s much more spacious.”

With 12 cutting stations, Envy’s services include “any beauty you can do on your head,” Vega said. Some stations are rented out to other stylists; four are still offered for rent, she said.

“The connection with people, to put a smile on their face, is amazing,” Vegas said. “To make them feel good. They come in and you’re their ... psychiatrist, everything.”

“We like our neighbors in Newington, but we’re glad to borrow you away from Newington,” said Mayor Mark Kaczynski at the ribbon cutting. “We’ll hopefully build up your customer base here in Berlin.”

The salon is open from Tuesday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 to 3 p.m.

On Mondays, Vegas and her team host or attend styling classes.

The salon’s phone number is 860-757-3580.
