PLAINVILLE - Jeff “The Plant Guy” Elevelv of The Li’l Plant Shop recently celebrated the growth of his business at its new location at 8 E. Main St.
A therapeutic horticulturalist, Elevelv and his wife, Pat, first opened this business in Plainville last year.
The new location is an upgrade from a 600-square-foot to a 1,500-square-foot space, which provides room to host events and show off about 70 types of plants.
“The most important thing that sets us apart from other plant shops is the interactive experience that you can’t buy on Amazon,” said Elevelv. “You plant your plants yourself in a dish garden or a terrarium or whatever container you like. Plus, we give you really good, quality growing advice. We don’t just tell you to water your plant and keep it in the sunlight. We go into detail, because we want you to succeed.”
Elevelv said he has been gardening for 46 years, since he was 10 years old. Today, he has 180 plants in his home. Those at the store, he said, are mostly low-light plants because they are a type that people often find success with. However, he said he would be glad to order other types for people.
“I can help you do anything you want,” he said. “I have a genuine passion for planting that is still as strong today as the day I started.”
As spring weather arrives, Elevelv said, residents can expect to see tables outside the shop showcasing some seasonal plants.
In addition to running the plant shop, Elevelv said he holds monthly programs at 87 nursing homes, assisted-living facilities and schools in the area, such as Arbor Rose in New Britain.
He is the author of “How to Kill a Plant,” which gives gardeners advice on what to do and what not to do if they want to take care of a house plant.
Elevelv also hosts events for adults and kids at Li’l Plant Shop including birthday parties with hands-on gardening activities.
“Kids get to plant a dish garden and then add little dinosaurs or fairies to it,” he said.
Li’l Plant Shop also holds “plant nights” every Saturday where gardeners can get their fingers into some soil and discuss planting techniques with fellow enthusiasts.
“Like some places have paint nights, we have adult plant nights,” said Elevelv. “You can come with a bottle of wine and a pizza if you want.”
Town Planner Garrett Daigle, who attended a ribbon cutting with the Plainville Chamber of Commerce, said he is glad Li’l Plant Shop stayed in town.
“I think it will have a good visibility in this new location and that it will complement a lot of the businesses that we have downtown like the antique shops,” he said.
Town Manager Robert E. Lee, who also attended the ribbon cutting, said the town hopes to attract unique, niche businesses to downtown and Li’l Plant Shop fits the bill.
Elevelv said he felt other businesses in the area, such as Flipping and Stones, would complement his nicely.
