NEW BRITAIN – Connecticut State Police reported a man wanted in crimes across the state was apprehended by a multi-agency operation in New Britain Friday after being wanted by several law enforcement agencies, along with the FBI.

Christian Velez, 24, of Southington, has been accused of taking part in over 20 armed robberies utilizing firearms, several carjackings and assaults throughout the state since September. Law enforcement reported he has evaded apprehension attempts several times.

Information led authorities to find Velez’s vehicle in New Britain where investigators observed him attempting to leave the area before striking two state police vehicles while doing so. He then attempted to flee on foot. New Britain police were on scene to assist with taking Velez into custody.

Velez is currently being held on a $2.5 million bond. Investigations continue and officials said they anticipate follow-up arrest warrants to be issued.

The operation resulting in Velez arrest saw participation from the State Police Narcotics Task Force, Statewide Firearms Trafficking Task Force, State Police Tactical Unit, members of the FBI New Haven Violent Crime Task Force and New Britain Police.
