The final game of what is expected to be a six-game non-conference schedule for the UConn women’s basketball team has a date.
The Huskies will host South Carolina for their last non-conference regular season contest of the 2020-21 season on Feb. 8 at Gampel Pavilion, UConn announced on Tuesday. It is the first of a two-game contract between the schools that is scheduled to conclude in Columbia, South Carolina in 2021-22.
UConn will open its non-conference schedule Nov. 28 against Quinnipiac in the Women’s Hall of Fame Challenge at Mohegan Sun Arena and then play either Maine or Mississippi State the next day. The Huskies will return to the casino on Dec. 4 against Louisville. They will visit Baylor on Jan. 7 and travel to Tennessee on Jan. 21.
Four of UConn’s Big East dates have been announced - at Seton Hall on Dec. 6, home with Butler on Dec. 15 and with Xavier on Dec. 19, and at Villanova on Dec. 22.
The Huskies lead the series with South Carolina 8-1. The Gamecocks’ only win came Feb. 10 at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia. South Carolina held UConn to two first-quarter points - the lowest point total in a quarter for the Huskies since the NCAA moved from halves to quarters five years ago - on 1-for-16 shooting on its way to a 70-52 victory. It also was the first time UConn never had a lead in a game since Dec. 30, 2010, when it had its then-NCAA record 90-game winning streak broken at Stanford.
South Carolina ended the 2019-20 season on a 26-game winning streak and with a 32-1 record. The Gamecocks held the top spot in the final Associated Press poll of the season in March and are expected to be the No. 1 team when the preseason poll is released later this month. They lost two WNBA first-round draft picks (Tyasha Harris, Mikiah Herbert-Harrigan) but return a strong nucleus led by All-American sophomore center Aliyah Boston.
UConn could schedule a seventh non-conference game but Huskies coach Geno Auriemma said that was unlikely.
