NEW BRITAIN - Twenty one-bedroom apartments and space for two or three bars or restaurants will be available after the restoration of the historic Andrews Building, Mayor Erin Stewart and Jasko Development have announced.
The restoration by Jasko is expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2020.
This project is a way of meeting the growing demand for housing in downtown New Britain, according to Avner Krohn, CEO of Jasko Development.
“As more companies and development takes root in downtown New Britain, we are seeing an increased demand for housing for working professionals,” said Mayor Stewart. “When the first phase of Columbus Commons is completed later this year, over 100 new housing units will have been added to downtown New Britain. I applaud Jasko Development for their continued improvements in our downtown and their commitment to maintaining the historical integrity of our city’s remaining architectural gems.”
The yellow brick, limestone and terra cotta building has five stories, and the 500- to 700-square-foot units will be on the second through fifth. The first floor and basement of the building will be leased as bar and restaurant space.
According to Krohn, the apartments will appeal to people seeking luxury housing with high-end distinctive finishes. The spaces are now available for pre-lease and rent prices will be 20 to 30% lower than similar units in Hartford.
“The building will take on the décor of early 1900s Prohibition era,” Krohn said. “We hope to build on the work we have done and I believe we will see a more vibrant downtown with all of the continued adaptive reuse of historic buildings. As with our projects, we will partner with the City of New Britain, Connecticut State Historic Preservation Office and Eversource to make this beautiful building have yet another future. I would also like to thank the Downtown District and Gerry Amodio for their instrumental support and due diligence.”
The Andrews Building is at 132 Main St. It was designed by architect William Cadwell and it was built in 1903.
