BRIDGEPORT - A Plainville man has been sentenced to 60 months in prison for distributing crack cocaine.

Michael Kelley, 36, was handed down the sentence Thursday in federal court in Bridgeport. The prison term will be followed by four years of supervised release.

According to officials from the United States Attorney’s Office, the FBI’s Northern Connecticut Violent Crimes Task Force and the Hartford Police Department in September 2014 initiated an investigation into “narcotics distribution, firearms trafficking and acts of violence carried out by members and associates of Los Solidos in Hartford’s South End.” Los Solidos is a street gang in the city.

The investigation, which included the use of court-authorized wiretaps and controlled purchases of heroin, crack cocaine and firearms, resulted in federal charges being filed against more than two dozen individuals. According to federal officials, Kelley supplied Eduardo Zayas with large quantities of crack cocaine. Zayas, in turn, supplied crack to members and associates of Los Solidos.

On May 14, 2015, police discovered that Kelley and Zayas planned to meet to conduct a drug deal. That evening, Hartford police confronted both men in a parking lot on New Britain Avenue. According to federal officials, Kelley had about 320 grams of crack with him, as well as four cell phones and $2,573.  Both men were arrested at that time.

Police then searched an apartment in Plainville, where Kelley was living, and found about 1.1 kilograms of crack, two kilograms of powder cocaine, two kilograms of marijuana and $49,026. In addition, a search of a Hartford apartment connected to Kelley turned up about 50 grams of crack.

Kelley was brought up on federal charges on June 15, 2015. On April 17, he pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute 28 grams or more of cocaine base (crack cocaine).

Zayas, of East Hartford, has pleaded guilty to the same charge. On Jan. 27, Zayas was sentenced to 65 months in prison.
