WALDORF, Md. - The New Britain Bees began their road trip in search of putting together another winning streak, but that quest was denied first in the team’s opening game of a doubleheader with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Monday and then again in the nightcap.
The Bees managed just two runs over the two seven-inning contests, both of which came in the fifth inning of the 3-2 loss in second game on a two-run double by Ozzie Maritnez.
Jared James was the only New Britain player who had multiple hits in Game 2. He went 2-for-3 with a double.
As a team, the Bees left 13 runners on base and were forced to play catchup early on. They were down 1-0 after third and 3-0 after the fourth. The three runs came on a sacrifice fly by Kent Blackstone, a wild pitch by Giovanni Soto and a single by Josh McAdams.
Soto was charged with two runs in his inning of work, but Devin Burke picked up the loss. He went three innings and gave up one run on two hits.
The Bees’ bats had no answer for Brandon Crumpton, who silenced New Britain through seven-shutout innings in a complete-game performance, taking down the Bees 4-0 in the opener of the four-game series.
Crumpton allowed just four hits and struck out eight while allowing only one walk.
While the Bees struggled at the plate, the Blue Crabs thrived, launching a trio of home runs off New Britain starter Rainy Lara, who tossed all six innings for the Bees despite struggling to keep the ball in the park. Lara allowed a total of eight hits and four walks, making for crowded base paths for most of the evening.
Cory Vaughn was Lara’s greatest tormentor, smacking a pair of home runs while driving in three of Southern Maryland’s four runs. Rubi Silva was responsible for a third Blue Crabs long ball, hitting a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth.
Alexi Amarista reached base twice for the Bees, finishing the opening game with a single and a walk. Martinez and Alejandro De Aza also found the hit column, though the Bees’ four-through-nine hitters went just 1-for-16, and nobody in the New Britain lineup recorded an extra base hit.
