NEW BRITAIN – In honor of National Prevention Week May 8-14, a special event will be taking place in Walnut Hill Park this coming weekend.

The City of New Britain’s Drug Free Communities Local Prevention Council (LPC) is celebrating with a Prevention Palooza Saturday, May 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a rain date of Sunday, May 15.

“Prevention is a key aspect of the work the city has been doing to combat the addiction crisis,” Mayor Erin Stewart told the Herald. “Bringing prevention resources directly to the community through family-friendly events like this allow us to maximize outreach and impact.”

The event is being held in collaboration with the LPC and New Britain Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department.

Activities will include a DJ dance party, carnival games, a photo booth, performances by local entertainers, inflatable amusements and a free resource fair. A complimentary lunch will be served to attendees at 12:30 p.m. while supplies last.

“This will be a large, fun, family-friendly event where attendees will get to explore resources, meet community members, and register for programming focused on prevention,” LPC Prevention Coordinator Tyshaunda Wiley said.

The State’s National Prevention Week Planning Committee hosted an art contest for students in grades K-12 earlier this year. Winners are expected to be announced sometime this week.
