Lovell: What's a trick and what's a treat

Saturday, October 31, 2009 12:44 AM EDT

So, it's Halloween today. But unless you're still in elementary school, this holiday really stopped being important many years ago.

Instead of filling up a pillow case with candy, you're stuck buying inordinate amounts of candy to give out, staring at hideous costumes all weekend and, if you're lucky enough, cleaning off eggs and shaving cream from the night before.

But all hope is not lost.

You see, sports are the eternal pick-me-up, and there's plenty to choose from on this year's Halloween.

What should you watch? Well, that can be a bit tricky (or treaty ... get it? Nevermind.)

So to help you, the too-old-to-go-trick-or-treating-anymore sports fan, I'll break down today's sporting events, both locally and nationally, and whether you should consider them a "trick" or "treat." Enjoy.

Rutgers at UConn football, Noon, WCTX - TREAT: This should be a close game. Rutgers is 5-2, but still looking for its first Big East win. UConn, however, will be playing in its first home game since Jasper Howard's death. I'm expecting a close game with a Huskies win.

Newington at Glastonbury football, 1 p.m., Glastonbury High School - TREAT: It's always a treat to watch Glastonbury quarterback Sean McQuillan, who is a legitimate Division I college prospect. Glastonbury also boasts a beautiful stadium and football complex, which makes the price of admission completely worth it.

Edmonton Oilers at Boston Bruins, 1 p.m., NESN - TRICK: The Bruins have struggled early on this season, while the Oilers have to be considered one of the early NHL surprise teams. But if you're an average hockey fan, you might just want to pass on this one. The only reason to watch would be to enjoy the play of two of the league's better goaltenders – Boston's Tim Thomas and Edmonton's Nikolai Khabibulin.

Hall at Southington girls soccer, 2 p.m., Southington High School - TREAT: Southington needs a win or tie to remain alive in the race for a state tournament playoff spot. But Hall (11-1-2) is about as tough as they come. Hall was victorious the first time around by a 4-1 margin, but never underestimate a team that's playing for its season. Southington should come out with extra motivation.

Michigan at Illinois football, 3:30 p.m., ESPN2 - TRICK: Big-time matchup? No, not really, mainly because Illinois is just not that good. But talk about Michigan as a legitimate contender has also cooled significantly since the Wolverines have dropped three of their last four games.

Miami at Wake Forest, 3:30 p.m., ABC - TRICK: On paper, this looks like a solid ACC matchup. But I don't have much faith in Wake Forest keeping this game close. Miami is ranked and would like to keep it that way. I'll pass.

All NBA games - TRICK: I really tried to find a game or two to get on the list, but the slate of NBA games tonight is about as entertaining as watching a person sleep. The Blazers against the Rockets at 8:30 p.m. has some life to it, as does the late matchup between the Mavericks and Clippers. But on the whole, there's not much to like. I would make it an NBA-free Halloween.

USC at Oregon football, 8 p.m., ABC - TREAT: The two big-time 8 p.m. college football games (this matchup and Texas-Oklahoma State) are both worth tuning in for. Oregon hasn't lost since week one and USC has been a roll lately as well. It should meet all of the hype.

Texas at Oklahoma State, 8 p.m., ESPN2 - TREAT: The final treat of the evening, this matchup should also be entertaining. If Texas wins this, they have the inside track to the National Championship game. A win for Oklahoma State would shoot them up the rankings significantly.

New York Yankees at Philadelphia Phillies, 8 p.m., FOX - TREAT: How can you not love the pitching matchup between Cole Hamels and Andy Pettitte? Last year's postseason hero against one of the greatest playoff pitchers of all-time. This series absolutely has all the makings of seven-game classic, and game three will just be the latest installment.

There you have it, that's what I've got on my list. Trick or treat? You can decide that.
